Is the UK prepared to host an international neutron science facility?

The government has already set out its intentions - in its Science and innovation investment framework 2004-2014| published in July 2004 that "in a few cases there may be a strong case for the UK to host such a facility and where this is the case the UK Government will be actively involved in the international discussions to maximise the chances of a potential bid".

The UK research community has achieved outstanding success over the past 40 years in the design, build and operation of neutron research facilities. It is important, however, not to raise expectations inappropriately which can happen with any review. The timeliness of this review simply reflected the need for the UK to identify the future requirements of the neutron community and to plan accordingly to meet these.
